Who are your friends?

Friend, defined as,
noun
1. a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard.
2. a person who gives assistance; patron; supporter: friends of the Boston Symphony.
3. a person who is on good terms with another; a person who is not hostile: Who goes there? Friend or foe?
4. a member of the same nation, party, etc.
5. ( initial capital letter  ) a member of the Religious Society of Friends; a Quaker.
Hmmmm... So technically, I could treat others as my friends but to others, I could just be an acquaintance.
Acquaintance
noun
1. a person known to one, but usually not a close friend.
2. the state of being acquainted.
3. personal knowledge as a result of study, experience, etc.: a good acquaintance with French wines.
4. ( used with a plural verb  ) the persons with whom one is acquainted.
So now, I wonder, who are my friends and who are my acquaintance?
How many of this friends knows me well? Who can tell me what I like to do, like to eat or hobbies?
I don't tell people a lot about myself because I don't wish to give too much away. It kind of complicated.

Ah well. Destined to be quite alone. Haha

Meaning of Stitch (For Me)

Many people ask “Why do you like Stitch?” I would just gave them a brief answer of "Well, he is cute."

A freaking 18 year old Male, loving a character that is so unmanly…

But I would say, the answer isn't just 4 words, it is actually a whole lot of meaning behind it.

Lilo and Stitch
It teaches that your ‘ohana can be anyone, in this case, alien or human. It can be a group of friends, the people who lives in your neighbourhood or even your pet.

“In Hawaii, however, the "other" type of ‘ohana is more the norm than the exception. Many families consist of parents, grandparents and children all residing under one roof. It's not unusual to see a child being raised by a grandparent or aunt while the parents live and work elsewhere. The Hawaiian family or 'ohana can also consist of others not related by birth. A valued friend can be a member of your 'ohana. An entire group of close friends or associates can be their own 'ohana.”

-John Fischer, About.com Guide

-Bob Ho(Jackie Chan), Spy Next Door

-Stitch

So true…

Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch

Many a times, we are insensitive to people and we reprimand them for not performing as they should be. We don’t know what is happening in their lives and we just condemn them. In this case, Stitch has a system malfunction and his destructive programming took over and caused a lot of damage to Lilo. Lilo, in turn, condemned Stitch that he “is bad, and will ALWAYS be bad!”

We must be sensitive to everyone and find out what is going on before deciding our course of action. If not, we would have caused a ton of hurt to others.

Leroy and Stitch
This movie has 2 meaning to me.

First, to want your ‘ohana to be happy even if you need to sacrifice something in your life. For Lilo, it took a great deal to let Stitch, Pleakley and Jumba go. She wants them to be happy but she had to sacrifice her ‘ohana to do so. She made that decision to let them do what they wished to do and suffered the emotion that came afterwards.

Second, there is no place like home. Stitch was made Captain of the Big Red Battleship 9000 (BRB – 9000), Pleakley was made Galactic Alliance Community College Chair of Earth Studies and Jumba became an Evil Genius Scientist in his lab again. They all got what they want but when they had it, it doesn’t feel so thrilling once they reached there. In the end, they came back together and became a ‘ohana once again

See why I like Stitch so much? It isn’t just about the indestructible, cute and fluffy alien, to me, it means my life practices and values. There are much more meaning I found but this will do for now. I haven't touched on the TV series yet. :D

So next time, anyone ask me "Why do you like Stitch so much?" and I gave those 4 words, you know that I have actually understood a bigger meaning.

Dedicated Bus Driver

A simple story of a bus driver that does his best to benefit the commuters

It was a Sunday, 6th January. I finished church and was heading to the open space near Esplanade for my lightsaber training. I boarded Bus Service No. 36 to travel there but this bus ride was different from the rest.

When I first boarded the bus, I asked the driver if this Service No. passes by Esplanade. He merely answered with a nod, no words, just a simple nod. The immediate thought came to mind, he was just like the average disgruntled bus driver who makes the journey of commuters an upsetting one with his attitude. I tapped my card and headed to the open area to wait for my stop.

The next thing he did was surprising.

He exited his drivers seat, walked up to an old lady standing beside me, asked where she was going to which she replied somewhere in orchard and asked the passengers sitting in the yellow seats to let the old lady sit down. He had a unforgettable voice and weak English but he managed to bring his point forward to the passengers. He would only entered his drivers seat again when the lady sat down. What truly amazed me was the bus ride later on. It was jerky, bumpy, unstable. I lost my footing countless time, stepping on people's foot around me. Then, I remembered the old lady and what would happen if she was standing. Disastrous.

That was only the first part. He would voice out the bus stop at every stop and call out "Have a nice day!" to all who was alighting. He would keep asking passengers to move in when the front was too crowded, asked passengers to give a seat to the elderly whenever one boarded the bus and wouldn't move until they had a seat.

Then, my stop came and I heard that call of "Esplanade Mall" and when I exited, he bid me farewell with his usual "Have a nice day!" That immediately put a smile on my face. I wondered when will I see this driver again.

Of which I did, one month later, Sunday, 3rd February. I was heading to my usual lightsaber training and I boarded 36. The estimated arrival time was 15 mins, I wondered what had happened. When I came, I saw the familiar face of the bus driver that amazed me. I wondered what would he do this time.

This time, the bus was much more crowded. He exited his drivers seat just to guide the passengers to move to the back before returning the opening the door for passengers to board. That was just WOW. Other bus drivers will keep telling passengers to move in but he would get down and do it. Once again, he would call out the bus stops, ask passengers to give a seat to the elderly and keep getting passengers to move to the back, the usual.

But today, it's a whole different story.

There was a handicapped passenger on board. Now I know why it took so long to arrive, he was probably looking out for this particular passenger while giving attention to other passengers. This passenger wanted to alight and informed the bus driver via the blue button. The bus driver opened the exit door and allowed all able bodied passengers to alight first then exited his seat, told the handicap to wait a while, lifted open the platform, assisted the handicap off the bus and said "Have a nice day!"

Once again, my stop came and he sent me off with his usual farewell and once again, put a smile on my face.

I was impressed with the dedication he had for passengers boarding his bus. I heard a couple of complains from passengers from his consistent call to move to the back and stuff but what he did made a difference to the passengers he cared for. He really take cares of his passengers by ensuring they have space to board, ensuring that the elderly had a place to sit, the handicap do not have so much trouble when traveling by bus. This is what I call performing out of your job scope.

He, indeed, has made a difference to me, motivating me in my goal of helping random people whenever the opportunity rises.

Not the Normal Person

I'm not a normal person. I try to do stuff out of the ordinary.

Here is an example.

Many people know, I cycle to school almost every. My route will pass by Tampines Ave 9 intersecting Tampines St 72. This is the junction.

Notice anything wrong?

The Green Man on the left side is not working. This green man was not fixed for about a week or so. It caused a couple of problems for me as a cyclist. I almost got hit many times because I don't know if I should cross or not. Car drivers honking at me for crossing because the green man was out. It was confusing.

So on 8th February 2013, Friday, 7.45p.m., I called the Land Transport Authority for assistance. I report the problem and stated it was not fixed for a week. And I waited to see when it was fixed.

I returned to school on Wednesday because it was the long weekend (Chinese New Year). The traffic light still wasn't fixed.

Thursday, wasn't fixed

Exactly a week later, I passed by the traffic light in the morning and its still wasn't fixed. I had half the mind to call up LTA again but I waited. I ended school at 5+ and cycled back. And TADAH! It was fixed. That little part of me jump for joy.

Yeah, I contributed something!

So yeah. I don't achieve big things like Angela Zhang who managed to conceive a nano-particle system that can cure cancer without the side effects. I'm not like the Youth Olympiads who could excel in sports and bring fame to the country.

I'm just doing things behind the scenes that benefits people.

People passing by the junction would never know that a 17 year old teenager named Gabriel Ho help fixed a little traffic light. There is nothing to be proud of in helping to fix a traffic light but at least I know I could help prevent an accident.

I do things that benefit most people but people just don't know. Its as easy as giving up your seat to people who needs it more, offering help to a stranger if he/she couldn't do it, say a simple thank you to people to make way while you are cycling, etc etc.

Maybe to me, these small acts of kindness makes a difference to that person.

Here is a story:
"A young girl was walking along a beach upon which thousands of starfish had been washed up during a terrible storm. When she came to each starfish, she would pick it up, and throw it back into the ocean. People watched her with amusement.

She had been doing this for some time when a man approached her and said, “Little girl, why are you doing this? Look at this beach! You can’t save all these starfish. You can’t begin to make a difference!”

The girl seemed crushed, suddenly deflated. But after a few moments, she bent down, picked up another starfish, and hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied,

“Well, I made a difference to that one!”

The old man looked at the girl inquisitively and thought about what she had done and said. Inspired, he joined the little girl in throwing starfish back into the sea. Soon others joined, and all the starfish were saved."
 - Adapted from the Star Thrower by Loren C. Eiseley

Any ordinary person can help change the world. Lets all be like this little to help make a difference in peoples life and soon, you will see the world changing bit by bit.

Water Technology DONE!

Finally! I finished my Water Technology Module! Today was the last Term Test and Water Tech is over! Had many projects and stuff with my faithful T05 12/13 Group 2. I learn loads about water (and kind of developed a fear of drinking water) and the processes the water go through before being pumped to our houses.

Well, one of the projects we did is a video about Clarification Technology.
Here is the finished product!

The target audience is 11-14 years old, by the way...
We had lots of fun filming, goofing off and improvising on the spot!

A random Request

Here's a small bite.

Well, at 11p.m., I was doing some transaction for a purchase at an ATM at Pasir Ris Central Shop N Save
I finished updating my passbook and was ready to leave when a mid 30s guy requested something peculiar.

He wanted me to help him deposit $250 into his account. So, I agreed. He passed me his POSB Debit Card and I did the rest. I deposited the 5 $50 notes into the machine and the machine spat out a receipt.

My jaw dropped when I saw the amount on the receipt. $319.19 total. He had $69.19 before he deposited.

Wow.

He had a small sum of money in his account. Just like many Singaporeans who cannot cope with the rising costs of living now.

Amazingly, he isn't upset at all. He was cheerful, thanked me for helping him and greeted me with a "Happy New Year". He was carefree and walked away with a spring in his step.

A happy poor man. Wow.

He certainly taught me something tonight. We may have thing going against us but we must never let it affect us. We must lift our heads and live happily.

"Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever."
- Lance Armstrong

I'm still pretty stunned from that encounter but know what to do for the future!

Happy Valentines Day!~

Hello! It's Valentines Day! (or Friendship Day for Forever Alone people)

Well, I would be spreading the love and joy through sweets and flowers but nah...
Expect something from Easter or 4th May (if you get it...)

Today, I spent my Valentines at Temasek Polytechnic Subway(Yes, we have a Subway Outlet) with my favourite Honey Oats Cold Cut Trio with Onions, Tomatoes, Black Pepper and lots and lots of Pickles. Added with 4 Raspberry Cheesecake and 2 Chocolate Chip cookies! (There was a Buy 2 get 1 free offer)

Yum!

Haha, sad life eh?

Well, I'm not a big fan of this day but if I ever get something for people, I MAKE them.
Literally.

I made:
Kawasaki Rose
Box Flowers
Origami Hearts (Stitch not included)

And many more! Just whether I have time to do this stuff or not...

For chocolates, I remould them :D
 Familiar? I'm also getting this.

Surprise Suprise!

I may look like I'm nothing much but I can do stuff okay? :D
Hopefully, I have someone to help me out cause this stuff is difficult to do. D:

Anyway, piece of advice, don't spent all your money for roses and expensive chocolates.
Make something nice. Be unexpected and spontaneous. You can also give out stuff when its not a special holiday! Seriously, trust me.

Well, going to end off here. Need to complete my Water Technology video project. Will post video up here soon! There will be other stuff included too so do tune in!

Heres Gabriel,
Signing out!
(Seriously need a cool sign off...)

Woes of Valentine

Today's post will be a short one :D

Happy Valentines Day/Friendship Day!
14th February, a day of love, a day of happiness.

Not for me.

This year, I'm spending Valentines Day alone.

Well, I miss spending this special day with a certain someone. I remember my first Valentines when I gave her a origami box flower.
She was so happy when I hugged her from the back and popped it in her face. She then gave me a letter about how she never had plans for this special day but now, she has me.

It was a great day.

Meh... Now, I'm single again. Living a boring life...

Well, enough about me!
To all you lovers out there: Hope you last long with your partners! Love is something special!
To those who are Forever Alone like me :D : Don't worry, your partner will turn up!

Here's me signing out!
